Christian-themed Tribulation Knights anointed for PCs

Stealth-based third-person action game preaching Christian values announced; violence-free title set in days after The Rapture.

As the gaming population grows, Christian-themed games are gaining traction in the industry. One of the more controversial titles from 2006 was Left Behind: Eternal Forces. The religious real-time strategy game drew fire from various religious groups, both Christian and non-Christian, who claimed that it promoted violence and intolerance.

"You want to take it outside?" "No." "Me neither."
Atomic Design Laboratory, a developer based near St. Louis, Missouri, isn't letting the bad press Left Behind received thwart its plans to make its own Christian game. The company has announced Tribulation Knights, a stealth-based third-person PC game.
Tribulation Knights is set shortly after The Rapture and stars an agent of the titular organization. Created by the church, the Tribulation Knights are tasked with helping Christians steer clear of persecution and incarceration from a "worldwide cult organization."
Violence is practically nonexistent in the game, claims the developer. The only weapon gamers will have in their quest is a slingshot, which is used to take out alarms and security cameras.
The game's Web site says Tribulation Knights will have the "largest environments ever seen in the Christian gaming world," as well as "electronic Bible text references," free-form gameplay, and flying vehicles.
Atomic Design Laboratory has not yet announced a release date for Tribulation Knights.

I mapped out their location on Google Maps, and their office is less than 30 minutes from my apartment and exactly one mile away from the church my wife and I attend.

A Thief-style game is a smart choice for Christian developers. I'll definitely be downloading the demo (assuming there is one) when the game is released.

I thought you might like to know what has been happening to the game Tribulation Knights. It is still around but I switched engines to the Torque TGEA and had to rebuild it.

Since the economic downturn, I have had a budget of nothing, so it has been taking me longer to complete. Here are just a few snapshots from the Bunker level.

The underground chapel is almost complete.
The Church is where you go to restore the faith of your game character. In the game you face many difficult situations, and environments. Any of these can cause a players faith level to falter at times. Going to a gathering of Christians will help restore these levels quickly.

Another Underground Chapel shot.

The underground sick bay, where you go to restore the health of your game character.

In the city you are being watched by overhead blimps.

In the city there are citizen check points with Armed Enforcers to control the people.

The first Episode levels and assets are about 95 % complete.
The additional 5 Episodes have most of the levels in progress, and about all of the assets ready since they are re-used.

The code progress: Still to be completed is the player profile, and save/load system.
The in-game quiz engine which is at 50% completion.
The combat system is still at 25% completed. The Enforcers can bring down your health with blows.

The website is down, but it will be back up soon. Some hacker messed with it, so I left it down.
Hope to have a video this week.

Welcome to the forums, producer.

It's good to see Christian game developers using the forums to keep us informed on their projects.

Looks good. I still don't see why a Christian game can't have violence, though. Violence and swearing. All good stuff.

I have be longing for another Thief style game. I'm going to play it just to see if it helps fill the void. I'll still find myself playing Thief 3, still my favorite of the series.

Maybe if they get bigger later on they can use a writer Tek, hint, hint :p.

Ooooooh I finally meet a Christian TGEA'er. I've been eying Garagegames' engine for the past couple years wondering if it's worth the 300 bucks. I'd be interested to know any of your opinions on the engine. I'm also curious about the map editor because I've heard it doesn't have all the features it needs like say Hammer or Unrealed and can make map making a pain.

IMO Ogre is what I would use if I were making a game. Then again if I were going that route I might go with the collada format, compile shaders with colladafx/Cg and use bullet physics (which also supports collada physics). Blender supports collada pretty well, so you could [hopefully] not need any intermediate steps between modeling and importing into the engine.

I've been looking at Ogre on occasion too. I am just intimidated by having to put parts together. Whatever I do I'll actually download stuff and try it before spending 300 bucks XD. I do plan to use Blender whichever I choose. I'd still like to talk to someone who has actually used Ogre and/or TGEA.

I just uploaded a new video of the game if anyone is interested in it.
This is just a teaser but it shows more of the features in action.
Next month there will be a lot more to show.

I tried to embed the video window in my post but it just appeared as code.
If anyone knows how to post videos here please let me know.

I'm pretty sure we have the forums configured not to allow embedding of video to prevent abuse. Linking to videos not in violation of the ToS is perfectly fine, though.

Delays to Tribulation Knights again.
Due to financial impacts I have not been able to complete the game yet.
It is not forgotten!
I am working on updating the game play myself, tweaking models, and textures.
Unfortunately I just can not afford to hire any programmers right now to help complete the main mission system.
Hope and pray to have something new to show later this year.
Thanks,
John
