Turn off the TV Fast

Genesis1315

Ladies
Our family did this a couple years ago and will be doing it again this year. We do not much watch that much TV, but the time we do, could be better spent with the family. I just wanted to share this information with you, not really a discussion. While it could be classified as an RD topic, I am hoping to get the information out a bit more than RD usually allows.

Here is a link to the information provided by Family Life. If you and/or your family is planning on participating, please let me know (PM is fine) so we can pray for you at during this time (yeah, I know, sorta a prayer request too :p )

Turn off the TV fast

I did something like this (well my step-mon made us). We weren't allowed to use anything electronic. Got kinda boring after a while, but I guess I could live without TV (not forever though, gotta watch the news some how).

there are other sources for the news. It is amazing how creative one becomes. Our daughter is not to enthused over the prospect of no Higgley Town Heros, but I think we will have enough fun that she will not miss it

laf we dont watch much tv unles its anime or the news but we just cut cable back so yeah

I did this for about 3 days this week. I was surprised at how much the TV can distract you from things. I didn't listen to music or the radio either.

Wow, no music, i dont know if i could go through a day without music.

Still doing it and I am gradually adding things back into the mix. I watched a little of news last night and turned on the TV because I had company, but turned it back off promptly after they left. I have been playing KOTOR II on the XBOX since about 4:30 today, but other than that no radio or CD and no TV shows today. I will not stay like that but it is a good way to make sure that you have time for extensive prayer and meditation on occasion. I plan to do it from time to time in the future though.

I should add that I went through quite a bit of turmoil over the last week and I needed that time to get things back right and make sure they are right.

Its amazing how intrusive the TV has become. Im gonna give this a try, so pray for me and my family. Before this I would just mute the commercials because they just get SO annoying playing the same mindless trash over and over again. BUY, BUY, BUY, BUY! SPEND, SPEND, SPEND, SPEND! WORSHIP FALSE IDOLS, WORSHIP YOURSELVES! Ugh! I personally dont like watching "TV", however I enjoy movies, maybe its cause they dont have commercials. Has anybody read the book 1984? Pretty soon the TV wont come with an on/off button, so enjoy it while you can.

Definately will be praying for you.

And get this, I just received a DVD player for my b-day, and I have to wait 31 days before trying it out :)

I have already prayed for you. I am still in my fast but, like I said, gradually coming out of it. I continued on with KOTOR 2 yesterday after some reading--that game is huge even bigger if you choose the light side. I played some of the HALO 2 multiplayer maps w/ my brother-in-law and his kids last night. I also watched some of Fahrenheit 9/11 on dvd last night (a true horror movie....I prayed constantly thoughout the movie). I also listened to a little music. Still after 4 days, no TV shows besides a little news from CNN.

If someone is really stuggling, sure this could be a good way to bring a family a closer to each other. I find it a bit extreme, though, for the casual t.v. watcher. If a family manages their time, there is nothing wrong with watching some television every night (or whenever). So in my opinion, it's more about the self-control of the individual or family as to who this would be good for.

Edit: For those participating, I am praying for you. :)

After the first one, we did become more casual viewers instead of die-hard viewers. I can remember my husband's question after hearing the Family Life Today program...Do you think we watch too much tv? (hehehe..my response - if the question had to be asked then the answer is probably yes) The focus is really on strengthening our relationships with each other and God. August is always a hard month for us to do this because football season is getting underway now and we as a family love watching football.

On the other hand, our boardgames get more use, we are more creative with the things we do, we talk to each other more and while we will go back to watching tv on sept. 1, the lessons we have learned during this time will have much more staying power than the shows we missed.

Thanks for your prayers.

p.s. our daughter asked this morning if she could watch a movie this morning, and while she was pouting a bit when I said no TV until Sept 1 (which in all honesty, I am not sure she understands), her countenance changed when the thought of playing with her LeapPad entered her mind.

everyone complains they are missing a show when they go off tv. weird huh?

look, it's here! "new" invention called "the RECORDING VCR", which RECORDS your shows AUTOMATICALLY if you know how to use it? :p So you do NOT have to be glued to your TV DAILY at 6 or 7 PM each night?

Surprisingly lots of kids at my school DO NOT KNOW how to record their programs, they only know how to press the record button, which means that your VCR is STUCK to whatever you see on your TV screen.
