Ubuntu and a DVD Ripper

I just loaded Ubuntu up on my old desktop, and I was looking for the best DVD ripper. Any suggestions?

My goal is to be able to rip the DVD onto my computer, and then move it to an external drive so that I can attach it to my Mac laptop and watch a DVD as I'd like -- rather than having to carry a bunch of DVDs around with me. The reason I'm not ripping it directly to my Mac (via Handbrake) is that it takes forever, and my desktop has two DVD drives!

Is dvdrip not still in the extended repositories? It's what I used a while back.

If not, I think Google will probably help you the most here.

I use acidrip, it is basically a fronted to mencoder and can output batch files. I encode everything into h264 and it isn't bad (about 2-4 hours for a DVD). Just let er rip and there is no noticeable speed difference :P

DVD ripping is never fast, no matter what you are using...HOWEVER, I use a program, I forget the name, (do not have it right now, recently reformatted), that I was able to rip DVDs on to my PC in about 15 mins, but it did not rerecord them, it just broke the protection and copied the files (.VOB), then I used (if I needed to) Any Video Converter to make them mpegs or what not...

EDIT: Just remembered the name, DVDfab Decrypter, and then I used DVD Shrink if the files were too big... You can just use DVD shrink straight out, but you need DVDfab Decrypter installed to break the protection on some newer DVDs...

Most Dvd Rippers or copying programs will not bypass or take out the copy protection, instead they copy the VOB files, thus rendering the final product NOT A TRUE DVD. I have used many programs in the past but for over 3 years now all I use is Clone DVD 2, copies the whole Dvd in original format[an average copy takes me less than 15 minutes], but it also REQUIRES ANY DVD which removes the copy protection, this makes the copy REGION FREE. Any Dvd can also be used to copy some dvd's by itself but not all and they have recently added the funtion of copying HD DVD's, of course this includes BLU RAY but you need a Blu Ray Burner for that[obviously], and Any Dvd also makes your Dvd drives Region Free, here is the Link: http://www.slysoft.com/en/
You can download a 30 day trial, this is the FULL PROGRAM USAGE, but everytime your pc starts up you get a anoying message about the time remaining, Cya all :)

Copying [Decrypters] and Ripping to me are 2 different things, Ripping (rerecording whatever [video, sound, music] to a format of your choice [like windows media player for music], Copying is copying the .VOB files straight off the disc, and yes, to copy these off, YOU DO HAVE TO BREAK PROTECTION, you just are unaware you are doing it... If you cannot just copy and paste the files, you need Decrypter to BREAK the protection...
