sooo um first off today is not a good day... get a text from my dad to come home right away... i figured i was in trouble... get home and find out hes really sick throwing up and all that junk...
then i went to my computer to look some stuff up to help him....anddd my mac froze. When i restarted my computer it decided it wanted to go to a white screen and make a funny noise... so i restarted it.... same thing white screen with a folder with a question mark on it.
i have look all over and all i have found is ctrl option p, r...... and uh yeah that didnt work. so um if anyone has any advice let me know. and pray so i dont throw my computer out the window!
 
Oh.. and on the note of what to do. What that sounds like is a dead hard drive. The mac is trying to boot up and load from the hard drive and it is not able to. You may need to get the HD replaced. But first when you start up the mac hold down the "Option" key and go to the system preferences. Once there you can try and check out what the boot drive is. That is basically where the computer looks for the OS. Go to that option and choose your hard drive as the boot drive. If that doesn't work it is likely you have a fried HD
 
My wife was teasing my last weekend ... we were looking at laptops and she said where are the macbooks?

FYI: I want a Macbook badly (To load Vista on!)
 
heck anything is better then nothing... right now im using my dads laptop cause my mac has committed suicide.... UG i hope i can fix it cause i could only find a couple things and most ppl were saying that if it does this it means your hard drive cant mount or somethign like that... dont know what that means but thats what they said
 
Look up at my 2nd post Gala. Thatll give you an idea of whether it's a dead HD or just an error that made your HD a secondary drive.
 
atm im praying that i can win the computer from elitist jerks but uh yeah thats not happening but a guy can hope cant he?
 
Prolly a dead HD. Call applecare... or even better if you're near an Apple Store go in to the Genius Bar. Hopefully you'll be within warranty and they'll replace it for free. If you aren't in warranty and you can confirm you have a dead hard drive you can go buy a new drive for your computer (is it a macbook?) and there are a lot of tutorials online that can walk you through replacing a harddrive.
 
its an Imac... my dad is asleep or id ask him how long our warranty is but we have had them for like 2-3 yrs now so im thinking its up.
we have an apple store but its about 45 mins away and with my dad in his current state i dont want to leave him how he is.
ill call applecare and see what they say... ug do you know how much the hard drives are?
 
I've never done a replacement on an imac before. The macbook is like 50-100 depending on what size you get. I know next to nothing about an imac though. Sorry buddy
 
well im just mad cause that means no wow for a while and that makes me a sad panda... i wonder if tree could use his gold to pull some strings.....
 
um i have no clue atm... im looking at them and i think its hilarious how a 1tb hard drive is cheaper then a 250 or 500mb.
so far what ive seen its roughly $100-150 dollars for a decent one but i really dont know what good brands are or what im looking at... all i know is i need a 3.5 size and um yeah.
any advice from you gurus would be a great help!
 
Galatians, it's possible that it could be something other than a burned out HD.. although that's what it sounds like. Before you go about replacing it I'd make sure to verify that is in fact the problem. Also, you want to be very careful in your research because updating a HD in a laptop is much different than doing so in a desktop computer. In a desktop you can basically slot in any HD as long as you have the proper connectors. But a laptop you have to make sure you have the correct model because of size issues and connection issues. Just make sure to read up on it a lot before you do anything. Also.. there were several different versions of the imac if I remember correctly, so you want to make sure you are looking at what you need for your particular version of the imac.
 
yeah i have a 17 in intel mac... already looked up all the fun stuff.. we checked and from everythign i have read and tried it seems to be a burned HD.... im pretty sure we are taking it to the genius bar sometime
