What are the benefits of Ventrilo vs Teamspeak. I am asking everyone for their experiences. I'm asking becuase one of our TF2 members said he has a Ventrilo server we may use for TF2.

Ventrilo costs money. TeamSpeak is free.

Ventrilo (allegedly) offers better voice quality. TeamSpeak is free. (Yes, I said it twice.)

That...pretty much sums it up.

ventrillo is also more of a pain to setup user side, has more functions (which means more annoyances), and more options that can mess someones settings up.

teamspeak- free

Vent is easy, teamspeak sounds weird. Free vent supplied by member>Free teamspeak.

But.....teamspeak may have more TOJ/CGA friends on it playing other games...

Mumble is also pretty good from what I have read. I have set up a server to try it out at zenith.zxlu.com or 66.212.24.171 if the DNS hasn't updated.

I've never had a problem with TeamSpeak but I have never tried Ventrilo. Probably because TeamSpeak is free. Free goes a long ways at my house.

To clarify my previous "Ventrilo: not free; TeamSpeak: free" statement: It doesn't cost anything to download the Ventrilo client and join a server. The same goes for TeamSpeak.

The difference is that the Ventrilo server ToS (Terms of Service) is so restrictive that it's not feasible for most people to run a Ventrilo server. Even then, I believe the server would be limited to hosting 8 users.

The TeamSpeak server ToS, on the other hand, is much more lenient. That's why the Christian Gamers Alliance runs a 100-user TS server, but we don't run a Ventrilo server.

So the clients for both formats are free, but it costs to rent a Ventrilo server while running a TeamSpeak server is free.

lucky to get 6 at once? I've had 15 in a room before and it ran jsut fine on my dsl connection..and skype can be jsut as bad due to it's being on vox by default.

I've been on both Ventrilo and Teamspeak servers and in my opinion, Ventrilo had better voice/audio. Other than that, I guess I never have checked out the extra features any of the programs offer.

my old guild in WoW had been using teamspeak when I first joined several years back. As stated above we had issues with sounds quality, so the guild leader decided to get vent. To clarify, users of ventrilo do not have to pay anything, it's the host that pays for the vent server. I am not sure what the cost is, but the guild leader then said the cost wasn't enough to worry about (some of us offered to send a couple bucks a month to help pay). Sound quality is much better and it's not hard at all to setup.

I've used both over the last few years, and i must say ventrilo is hands down much better than teamspeak, imo.
