Hey C$, what's your prescription? Do you know? There are soft lenses for astigmatism if you don't have too much of it, but the vision often isn't as good as with gas permeable lenses. GPs (gas perms) take a bit longer to get used to, but ultimately they will be very comfortable and healthy for your eyes.
Also, there are new lens materials now that are better for far-sighted prescriptions. (sorry if you know this already but other people might be interested?) The main reason far-sighted lenses have been a problem is that these kinds of lenses are thicker in the middle, so not much oxygen gets through. But with the new materials let more oxygen through even though the lens is thicker. Also, with GPs, they move around on your eye more so the tears under the lens move around more which also helps with the oxygen.
Oh, and GPs do kind of mold your cornea over time. But if you have too much astigmatism for a "regular" GP, they might still put some of the astigmatism prescription in it.
Let me know how all this goes. I'm an eyeball geek (i.e. optometry student).
