Warrior as Secondary Profession

I created a new character the other night, a Necromancer, and I've just chosen Warrior as my second profession - I liked the idea of having a "dark warrior" kind of character. But I'm wondering if that was such a hot idea.

Warriors, I'm guessing, have far better armor than a Necro could ever have, and with Necro as my first profession, that's what I have to wear. All of the Warrior skills I've seen (so far) are all based on melee combat, so you need good armor and the Warrior primary of Strength helps with dealing the big damage in close.

So am I missing something or is having Warrior as a second profession pretty useless, or rather, not very efficient, and I should have gone Warrior/Necro instead?

PS - With attribute points, and specifically with a warrior, is it better to dump all your points (or most anyways) into one particular area? Ex. forget axe and hammer mastery and focus on just pumping up your sword attribute.

Yeah, it probably would have been better to go W/N. Better armor, and plus the N primary skill tree is Soul Reaping, which isn't that great unless you want to be a caster. And yes, you DO want to focus on one weapon type. You can change the attribute points back and forth every so often, obviously, but generally it's best to pick one and stick with it.

Warrior secondary is quite common. Especially Mo/W. The key is to focus on the strengths on the primary you have chosen and use the secondary to supplement what you are trying to do.

I have seen N/W in game before, more as a secondary attacker who starts with hexes (often blood magic). Warrior has a low energy amount and regen, so that is a weakness of primary warrior build with magical secondary. If you want to focus on melee, W/N may have been better. Necro primary will be better for casting ability. Also, don't forget soul reaping to benefit from the energy boost. Necro has several touch hexes and steals that are good with warrior as well. Using warrior secondary gives you things like sprint - to escape, and protective stances/shouts.

I am playing a R/W right now and enjoying it. I currently use Beast Mastry and then chase my pet in and start hacking with my sword and adrenal skills.

As for attribute points, since the update, there is no refund point system, so I would focus all your points toward one - sword, axe or hammer. Only change them in town if you decide to change weapons. Your skills are locked on weapon type too, so not much point changing weapons until you can pick useful skills for the new weapon. Typically 3-4 attributes should be getting all your att points to make you as powerful as you can be in those areas.

Yea, I kinda wanted a melee character who could raise his/her dead enemies to continue the attack, but started with Necro as primary 'cuz I think they look cooler. :)

So looking over the different combos, I'm guessing Necro/Mesmer, or perhaps Necro/Ranger (for Beast skills) would have been better, but Mesmer seems to be the best choice as a secondary for any primary magic user.

Anyone come across any articles on the pros/cons of the different profession combinations?

/off to delete character and start again... :P

A couple of things to think about:

1) Your armor class is tied into your primary profession. Necros have decent armor but it is not as good as warrior armor.

2) Your energy total is tied into your primary profession. Warriors can get serviceable energy amounts but it is not nearly as high as the necro.

A warrior can be a serviceable secondary profession, although later in the game it becomes increasingly impractical for non-warriors to engage in much melee combat because of the armor situation.

If you are looking to hack people to death through the game and carry an undead army around with you, be a W/N. If you are looking to hex the daylights out of people and reap boundless energy from corpses so you can hex even more people, go with N and some other secondary.

Here are two secondary professions you didn't mention that I think are worth considering:

- Necro / Elementalist. With Soul Reaping, you would have a large energy pool to power high-damage elementalist spells, plus you would have all the Necro's hexes and undead business.

- Necro / Monk. A friend of mine uses this build and he is insanely hard to kill. Not only can he heal himself, but he can also heal all his undead minions (often using Heal Area) and can even do spot duty as a secondary healer.

Just a few thoughts.

Hmmmm...both those sound pretty good. I just finished playing up to where I last left my character off, but I haven't picked my secondary yet. Now I have to think about it again.... :)

Thanks for your help guys!

Don't accept a secondary until you've done every secondary quest. You'll get more experience and also get to try out a few skills from each class.
