2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

The God of Comfort
3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our affliction,[a] so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

Learning to comfort others means going through tough times ourselves, then turning to God for comfort? Yup that's what it says. A couple of thoughts here, first God is the source of all comfort, not ourselves, just letting Him work in us and comfort us. Secondly it equips us to comfort others through Him in any situation. Don't have to tell them, "Been there, done that", just let the same comfort that God gave you spill over. Note that praise if first given to God, a key part, giving God the Glory and praise always.
