Hebrews 4:12 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart.

This is one of the first scriptures I memorized as I began to grow in Christ. As I view it, it is both a promise and a warning. A promise that The Word of God is more than just a static, musty collection of old books, but a means to life and discernment. It is a warning in that if you don't want to be changed, but want to settle for the status quo, that won't happen if you really read and study God's Word. If you are faithfully reading the Bible daily as part of your devotions God's Word will convict and change you. The Word of God will show you how to live in peace with God, and it will give the Holy Spirit access to your most secret inner self, changing you and improving you to be more Christ like.
