i dunno if its just the program i use but i was wondering if there was something better than REALVNC which i currently use. i ask this because im moving away soon and ive always kept REALVNC on my moms laptop so i can access stuff when on vacation but do you guys have any better suggestions?

Care to define VNC? ... although it's probably safe to say if I haven't heard of it, then I probably have absolutely no input to add to this discussion.

*sigh*

Virtual network control. basically i can control my moms laptop remotely and view her normal desktop and use the start button, etc.

I use tightvnc..but it's the same thing. Otherwise i use ssh if it's a linux box. Stick with vnc as it has very strong encryption..just make sure your password is at last 8 characters fr more and a good secure password.

agreed with ssh, i might install a ssh server on her laptop too, but i'll try out tightvnc, looks more updated than realvnc. i really want something that will have decent speed. ive noticed lag just inside the house network which discourages me.

Standard VNC sends the password out as cleartext, it isn't that secure. TightVNC uses a ssh tunnel to encrypt all traffic iirc. I liked realvnc a little, as you can actually start up some games with it over a vnc, it is low FPS but it is funny.

For my linux boxes I have VNC installed but it is only available via localhost. You have to ssh and setup the forwards yourself :P The only place I really use VNC at is work (Id rather setup services via a gui then cli x.x), otherwise ssh works just fine. My VPS has cPanel so I don't really need anything for that cept the occasional ssh to fix some permissions or a bad setting and scp [sftp].

thanks for the info, it actually is faster than realvnc. plus i'll prolly load it to my linux box once i get it setup again just for fun
