What Would Jesus Play?

No, this isn't going to be some grand and exhaustive thread berating videogames that feature heapings of violence and other evils. I just thought it was an interesting question. I was looking at my copy of Resident Evil 4 the other day, because I was contemplating picking it up and playing again. I wondered if it was something where I could see myself playing it while Jesus was kickin' it (Kicking what exaclty? Can't be certain) on the couch with me. I think it'd be slightly awkward, don't you?

"Dude, you have to check this part out! Watch what happens when I don't kill the chainsaw wielding communist in time!"

Yeah, I don't think that'd go over too well. Which brings up another question. If I wouldn't play it around Jesus, should I be playing it at all?

Thoughts?

Can you mail me your copy if you decide not to play it anymore? ;)

Just kidding (sort of... lol).

I have mixed feelings on the issue. I think there are certainly a ton of games that Jesus would not Himself play, but I also think that He would understand that a lot of games are simply just games. It's a very thought provoking and personal soul-searching question to ask.

I think he's fine with it. But I could be wrong. Either way, I doubt if I hung out with Jesus we'd be playing video games all the time (but that would be pretty freaking cool).

I think he would understand it's mearly a game, for entertainment purposes.

You sure he'd feel that way about Doom 3 or GTA, even using your reasoning that it's merely for entertainment purposes?

1 John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If any one loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

I would have to say if the Spirit of God convicts you over any matter like this, then I would say that you should be obedient to your conviction. For it would be for your betterment.

No matter how entertaining, I would never love a game.

hmmm......If its like that then i guess we can say the same thing about pronography, etc.....Would you think things like that should be taken seriously or that it's just entertainment?..:)

Heh, I was going to come back and bring that up. I'd really like to see an explanation for that one.

Games and porn are completely different. Games are entertainment, porn on the other hand, I don't believe is. Porn might be more of a temptation, addiction, stimulant. I think I would draw the line at porn games.

Mr. Slice had it right when he said:

No they aren't. They aren't different at all. Clearly, games can be addictive. However, played in moderation, they're OK, right? So if you view porn in moderation, does that make it OK? What's the difference between lusting after the body and participating in imagined violence?

I give this thread two or three more posts before thewonderfully lenient moderators toss this one into the Religious Discussion area, where perhaps it should have been posted originally.

I don't see porn as entertianment, maybe thats where our opinions differ.

What do you see porn as? How do you qualify entertainment? I'm geniunely interested, and not looking to drag this into a fight.

-What do you see porn as?
An artless media created for the soul purpose of creating sexual arousal, lust, addiction, etc.

-How do you qualify entertainment?
A media or medium, fun and amusing, that doesn't affect my faith in a negative way.

I'm geniunely interested, and not looking to drag this into a fight.

Good, because I settle all e-fight in CS 1v1 awp_map. :)

One man's porn is another man's entertainment.

I've seen more than my share of games that qualify as "artless media".

You say that you enjoy games that don't affect your faith in a negative way, but I think that's a given. The argument is that games such as CS DO affect your faith in a negative way.

Are you saying the content of Counter-Strike (the pixelated gfx & animation) affects my faith in a negative way?

Who are you to say what affects my faith, when you are not one who shares it?
