Well, I'll only have ten days, starting Dec. 8, to play World of Warcraft, so I'd like to have my character classes and names set by the time I start.

Toward that end, I'm asking for input on what class I should play. Here's some basic information about my style of MMO play:
  • I usually start playing any MMO with a fighter class to learn the game interface, but since I already played during the beta, I trust I have a firm grasp on the controls.
  • During my time in Midgard (Dark Age of Camelot), I enjoyed playing a Troll Shaman who could neatly switch from healing his allies to taking a few swipes at the enemy when victory was assured or when the party had an excess of healers.
  • I'm definitely the social type of gamer. In fact, the primary purpose of this 10-day visit is to fellowship with members of Tribe of Judah's guilds and The Forgiven.
  • I'm big on playing characters with the ability to heal other players: Troll Shaman in Dark Age of Camelot, medic in TeamFortress Classic, and gorge in Natural Selection. When I play Dystopia, I usually pick the loadout best equipped to heal my teammates.
  • While I'd like to be able to solo when necessary, the purpose of my visit is social in nature, so ability to level quickly without a group is trivial.
  • For some reason, I prefer to play taller characters. Maybe that's because I am tall in real life. But it might have something to do with fond memories of playing an impressively tall Shaman who frequently quested with a familiar dwarf (screenshot dated Feb. 4, 2002). I have plenty of love for the vertically challenged, though, so my preference is not a strong one.
  • I like being able to carry a lot of stuff. This may not even come into play in WoW, but in DAoC, the stronger your character, the more you could carry. The more you could carry, the better armor you could get and the less frequently you'd have to run to town to sell your stuff. Basically, I like to quest at my leisure and not feel pressured to run back to town until I finish what I'm working on.
Given my style of play, what race would you all recommend?

Tek, you are way too structured man, lol.

I would suggest three classes for you. A druid has the ability to heal and to dish out some damage. They do have ranged attacks, but druids, as far as I'm aware, aren't really well known for them. Druids are more known for healing, tanking, and physical (melee) damage.

I would also suggest the paladin (I always suggest paladins, and yes, I am very biased). Paladins are most well known for tanking. We are integral to any group, and in fact we're probably the best party based class out there. Not only that, but soloing comes extremely easy for a pally because of his armor and self-healing abilities. The pally's battles are typically very slow since we don't do a lot of damage.

The third class I'd recommend for your Alliance character would be a Hunter. Hunter's do not have the ability to heal others or themselves, although they can heal their pets. At level 10 you get to tame a "beast", such as a wolf, bear, spider, or any of the other many creatures found in the world. Hunters are a ranged class. One of the "downfalls" of the hunter is that he is limited to only two melee attacks. Not only that, but the hunter has a minimum range of fire, so if whatever you're attacking gets too close to you, you have to run while shooting to fight it.

I hope this helps.

No disagreement there. Of course, it doesn't help that I'm struggling to ward off a cold and there's little else to do right now.

Thanks for the suggestions. :)

If you like the ability to go toe to toe then throw out some heals as needed, then either a druid or palladin on the alliance side will give you that ability. If you would like to just heal, then go priest. Preists do have some ability to do damage, but usually at the expense of the ability to heal. And if you spec your preist for healing, you will probably "gimp" your character at the lower levels with the lack of ability to do damage. Given that you will be looking at a 10 day trial period, I suggest that you don't try a preist in that they are quite frustrating to level and often require to be in the higher levels before seeing any return on time invested.

Druids and Pallies should give you the largest return on time invested if you are interested in the ability to heal and do damage.

In your other thread, you posted that paladins were the least desirable class to play. I have a 60 paladin and would say that is hardly the case. I now have an alt in every class and always find myself wishing the class was more like a paladin in someway. But with every class, those unwilling to figure out how to use the seal system or spec outside of the one trick pony retribution tree will find the class boring.

Paladins are the king of survivability. Every other class will fall long before a paladin will. Since you have a limited amount of time and probably would like to corpse run the least, pick a paladin.

Paladin for president!

Hm. Someone did it for me.

Oh, I didn't say that. I just said that a little bird told me that Paladins are the least desirable class to play.

Dang! Now why didn't someone tell me that before I created my third paladin!!

Paladins are a blast to play, but you gotta know how to play them. Instead of soloing one creep at a time.. take on a camp of them. The people who say paladin's are boring I think are the type of people who are used to taking on one pull at a time. Yeah, it is boring as a paladin when you do that, that's why you take on multiple pulls. You'd be surprised (I would not suggest doing this at lvl 1, however).

I agree with Bowser.

Pallies can be a great deal of fun to play for a good gamer. I think casual gamers do not like them as much.

I know Camm also likes his Pallie and he has about all the different toons there are.

Pallies are really great in terms of power, but playing as one as a casual....

cast Seal, autoattack....thunk....thunk....thunk....thunk....HEAL!....thunk...thunk. thunk....

Imagine doing that for each enemy for 20 levels.

I have seen Camm fight and slow and steady are two words that I do not associate with his style.

If you have not seens Bowsers pull the entire camp style, you are missing one of the great sights in WoW.

lol.... make a mage. They do loads of damage and make their own water and their own bread so, if you are grinding there are only a few seconds of downtime. I really enjoy Klangdon. They also pvp well.

If you play a mage I think it helps if you are a bit ADD.

Blink*blast*freeze*blink*blast*freeze*rinse and repeat*

rinse = 1 min downtime for mana?

If you do it right you can reduce your down time to a few seconds with Evocation (every 10 minutes of course). And you also have pots.

Druids are fot the ADD type,
Am I a bear, a sea lion, a panther or night elf?
Do I cast, meele, hide in shadow, heal?

So much to do, so little time?

Just have fun :) whatever you decide we will love you for yoU! LOL

Alrighty. I've decided that I'll roll a Paladin for when I play with Redeemed and a Night Elf Druid for when I play with The Forgiven.

Next question: What race should my Paladin be? I was thinking human, but is there a race better suited to the class?

I'll also be working on character names. :)

Dwarven paladins are just really cool, but the Human starting lands are the most fun IMO.
