windows xp activation help

hey i need some help, my brother gave me a copy of windows xp home, and i installed it, everything going fine till activation..... it doesnt seem to understand i use dial-up even though it dials it up itself but it doesnt seem to read it..... so i downloaded an activation crack, but i dont know how thats suppose to work if i cant do anything to the computer before i activate it..... ?

hmmm i'll have to ask my brother about the serial number then. edit: i talked to him and aparently it was his own cd with a serial key he got with a key gen......... so yeah i returned that....
