Your Opinion: GeForce 6600 GT

I currently have a GeForce 5700 Ultra (now found for less than US$75, and I think it's time for an upgrade (can't run HL2 at low settings above 20 FPS). My price range is sub-US$200, and it must be AGP (not building a compy with PCI-E yet).

Anyway, after snooping around Tom's Hardware, I have reached the conclusion that this is the best card for my budget and needs:

GeForce 6600 GT

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127170

US$195 plus a US$30 mail in rebate.

Any opinions or comments about the card before I start saving my pennies?

I have the PCI-e 6600gt, its good for css and hl2

I have mine OC'ed to 560mhz core (500mhz stock), and 1.125ghz memory (1ghz stock), its generally a good card and runs farily cool compared to a 6800 ultra or something.

Yeah, no kidding. 6600gt will do a minimum of 55fps on a standard map at 1280x1024 on high graphics, (without AA, or AF) depending on the computer specs.

That's more than enough for me -- heck of a lot better than my current setup.
FYI Toms Hardware Guide is bad, i heard they are paid
Well, that still doesn't help me with my decision. =P "What do you think of the card," I asked.

the 6600GT is a very nice card and the last of the gneration of Nvidia cards(and ATI for that matter with the radeon 6000 XT) that don't require monster amounts of power. Grab it while you can.
Roger that!

I have 3 6600GTs and 6800 Ultra (the joys of having lots of kids) and I can attest they are a great card. Us Canadians pay about 160 bucks right now for the agp version of one. They are certainly fan favorite here.

Yes, go with the 6600GT, it's a great card and the 6800GT is only marginally more powerful for lots more money. I would have a 6600GT if I had more money to spend on my computer, my friend has one and it is a great card, you can max out all CSS's (and most other games for that matter) settings.

6600gt will pull an average of 75-80 fps on max resolution and settings, I mean the high settings in the options, except aa and af or vsync for css and hl2. Battle Field 2 at 1280x1024x32 on high graphics will do 30fps (i play on medium graphics at that setting, pulls 60fps). AoE3 will pull 1280x1024x32 on max graphics on 4x aa, 4x af with Low AA selected in game and runs smooth and looks awesome. Flight Sim 2004 will do 30fps on max settings on max res, with the dynamic settings all the way up with shadows on, (no weather on) without aa or af. With no weather on 8x aa and 16x af, it does about 10fps.
CS of course pulls 100fps on 8x aa and 16x af, about 70fps with a smoke nade (taxes system).

Are you sure it's GT? My PCI-E 6600 card isn't. Maybe you have the 128 mb one and I have the 256 mb. I just wasn't aware they made a GT model of the PCI-E version of the card. I know there is an AGP one, but thought that was the only one.

Soooo... how do I OC it? :)

Nope, its runs fine and OC's well. I wanted the gigabyte but they ran out of stock 5 minutes before i ordered.

Nice. Do we have anything for or against Rosewill?
I actually like them, I have a radeon 9600 from them and it hasn't given me any trouble at all. I also have a case and some memory from them, everything seems great, case is well built and cheap, and the memory works just fine.
