It's hardly surprising that the Arabs and the Jews have some of the same hangups, is it? They both share the same early tribal history!
Westerners / Northerners have ALWAYS kept Pigs. I suppose we managed the curing process in such a way that our pork didn't kill us - probably because of the lower temperature. Did you notice that shellfish are ALSO 'unclean' - another hard to judge foodstuff that causes a lot of food poisoning!
