I actually kinda disagree with this thread, especially for hybrid classes (shammies, druids, pallies). Sure, your dps is weaker than a ret pally's. But gear makes as much of a difference as spec does, and nothing's keeping you from doing a lot of work on your gear.
There are very few healers in the guild who who do not have a single piece of PvP gear that would be an upgrade to their PvE healing, so any healer can hit the BGs and be working towards an upgrade. Many dailies do not depend on DPS and are the same for healers as any other class. Very few healers do not have a single piece of gear or enchant that money won't help them get.
Anyhow, the cool thing about being a hybrid class, though, is that you can get a set of DPS gear and a set of Tank gear and be semi-competent in all of those things. Look at things like the Class Gear Planner wow-loot.com and just start tracking down off-spec gear for you. Obviously you won't be getting any raid loot for your off-spec, but you can go for BoE, quest, and 5-man gear no problem. Since the Kara reqs are designed to be attainable with those three things ... you can get yourself pretty good DPS. And then once you have that, the dps dailies and grinding really aren't that bad.
Sure, you'll never have the DPS of a ret pally. But as a healer, you actually have some chance of getting a raid slot sometime in the near future ... so who'd you rather be?
