Patriotism

Well i'll be the first to say it: I LOVE AMERICA and i know we aint perfect but i wouldt live anywhere else and i'll also admit i get really frustrated with people that live in america and say it sucks. my thought is: if you dont like it- leave.

Now this evening i went to a flogging molly concert and several times "freedom" was mentioned. The group leader sang about his dad who 5 years ago died and never felt what he was able to; freedom (whats left of the flag). he also talked about how moving to america was the greatest thing ever and that the immense freedom he felt even when his life wasnt in order and then sang black friday rule. If someone from ireland loves america and what it stands for even though we are going through a rough time economically, then why cant americans be patriotic too?

then why cant americans be patriotic too?

Because our leaders have repeatedly used "patriotism" to pass illegal bills and literally demolish the constitution. "Patriotic" has gone from being something that is good to an immoral excuse to screw over the general populace. Until the government is turned around to where it is no longer spying on its own citizens and is not throwing money out to corporations like chew toys, I don't think I can express much pride in our government.

That said I am proud to be an American, but that is a far cry from being proud of America as it is now.

I'll add onto that. I am patriotic toward a constitutional USA, but not what it has become.

In the Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln said, "... and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." That government perished long ago. An updated quote: "... and that government of the crooked politicians and hidden agendas, by the lobbyists and special interest groups, for the misinformed public of America, shall not perish from the earth." It's a sad truth. A great man is needed to push the USA back to its constitutional roots. That is why I'm voting for Ron Paul.

Is the US constitution so perfect that it would solve all the problems in the USA?

No, but it is supposed to balance the powers of the Judiciary, Executive and Legislative branches. Much like saying Christians are supposed to be peaceful and loving, yet you don't see that very often.

I think a patriot isn't just somebody who cheers for their country...they are also brave enough to stand up when something they see as wrong and say "This is wrong" and are willing to make a change. But...they need to do something to make a change and more often then not, the last step of that change should be your vote. Being lazy on the couch and writting in Ron Paul is seriously not enough to enact change.

We have had more than enough discussion on whether US members should write in or not. I do not think we need to continue this discussion here.

In addition this thread has a distinct possibility of turning ugly. All posters please do the following:

1. Review the your posts, both past and present, to ensure they are not offensive or distastful. Where relavent edit said post (this includes the post who refers to the act of writing in as lazy).
2. Remember the ToS you agreeded to and respect others. You will not agree with what everyone posts here but please be respecful and try and see the issue from their point of view. You do not need to agree but this does not give you the right to talk down to any member.
3. When you are posting simply to get a bite out of someone or to try and entice a flame war, stop and reflect on whether this actually reflects the type of person you want to be displayed as. You may think it is funny or that people are getting what they deserve but it simply makes you look jaded and foolish.
4. Please please remeber you reflect a christian community.

I did not refer to the act of writing in as lazy. My context is that beleiving that simply writing in a vote for anybody (or Ron Paul for that matter) as being enough to enact change is lazy. If you are looking for change, you have to work for it because society as a whole is resistant to change. Which means get of the couch and do something that gets people fired up with you to support the changes you are looking to enact. Now I compare that to maintaining status quo as being pretty simple. And in a two party system in the USA (Republicans and Democrates), regardless of which of the two get in, you are essentially maintaining status quo because we all know that one of those two will get in unless somebody can get in there and really muck things up to cause a massive change.

I'm sorry that may not have come across in my original post and I'm sure some people will still not like it.

I honestly fully agree with GP. Working within the society itself is really important

I sense the confusion of nationalism and patriotism, both are different in meaning. I to love=(boundaries) this country, and I vote for the best candidate who will closely represent the direction that resembles Gods way. With this please note, we as followers of Christ see things that others don't. That means there will be times when we are frustrated with actions taken but the actions taken are not ours even when we vote it so. True freedom only can lie with the acceptance of Christ and that is the freedom from sin's grasp. Through him can you know the true meaning of a Patriot! The key is "pure and binding LOVE"!

Thank you, you put into words what I was thinking.

I'm not trying to bash America or its systems or anybody here, just trying to ask you guys to think a bit deeper to what it means to be a patriot.

And you know what? I'm frankly disgusted how no political parties will address the zombie threat. That's why I'm writing in Ron Paul.

Throwing away danged votes for the friggin' WIN

I prefer Canada over the USA, but I'm going to write in Ron Paul too.

honestly play mgs3 and watch phelps own france and watch mel gibsons 'the patriot' and first part of iron , launching the jerico, it embodies a tiny part of the american spirit imo

You get to be taxed to death so you can use the wonderful free health care.

Taxed to death for free health care is an oxymoron. Nothing is free...the doctors don't work for free, the nurses don't work for free, there is rent to be paid on clinics, hospitals don't run for free. Somebody pays for it all - Canadians through taxes.

What is "wonderful" about it is it is universally accessable by all Canadians regardless of their status, not that it is free.

Oh, I should note that generally speaking, we aren't taxed to death, while alot of Canadians believe they are and spread misinformation about it and others swallow that information, studies, year after year after year show that the overall tax rate in Canada is about the same in the USA.

Guys, lets get back to the OP. I'm pretty sure we don't have to compare and contrast the health care and taxes of Canada and the US.
