Getting rdy for college :(

As i move toward going off to college i will probably not play gw much, i am prepping for several exams involving cisco routers and linux, as such i want to spend more time in these environments. Yesterday i had a interesting, how can i describe it? a tear in my sound layer. Thanks to a decent knowledge i was able to pinpoint the problem. Since then i have written a init script to fix the problem...thats the 5th so far.

I dont really want to play with guildies under emulation as it tends to go bezerk some times, level load times are high, and latency is fairly high. I believe this is due mostly to my poor system (p4 2ghz, 512mb, 128mb 5200). In march i will be getting my laptop for college, hopefully it will be tons faster.

I guess in essence i am giving up on gaming because my parents refuse to buy me a new desktop despite stated proof that the old one is inadequate. Gaming largely is a pain in windows, random lockups, long load times.

so either way windows or linux....its bad

You may find you have more time than you think to play but make sure you put more time into your studies, I learned that the hard way. Also as for you getting a laptop, realistically you will get more for your money with a desktop than a laptop. I am about to order the parts for my new box as we speak. This is mostly due to all the problems ive had with my laptop. The laptop is great, but it really isnt all that mobile. It sounds like you are going for a desktop replacement laptop in which case you will probably get something similar to mine. I have a toshiba satellite p25-s526. Its a fairly nice machine, but Ive already had to send it in for repair once and am about to do it again and its only been 2 months since the first time. My advice, buy a desktop, or better yet build one. Building a desktop>prebuilt desktop>laptop performance wise and money wise. The box im about to build is costing me about 2/3 what my laptop did and its worlds better than what I am currently using. I am sure myself and others on this forum can help you pick out parts that will perform better than whatever laptop you choose for about the same price.

hey, i'm a senior in college, & haven't stopped gaming yet, except for the two months this past summer that i was a church camp counsellor....

I said i would post a pic of my new desktop, so here it is

xmms is in the upper right (linux version of winamp, but it pwns winamp)

on the lower right,
clock, clock modulation adjust, desktop selector from right to left

middle bottom is my app launcher

left bottom is minimized apps

center is the left click menu , right click is a more advanced apps menu

everything has shadows and look great :P
almost everything animates on mouse over and click

That is by no means a "poor" system ... I think your long load times, latency, etc., is caused by something else. Have you tried running Anti-Spyware programs and Anti-Virus programs?

Anyways, cool desktop in linux :D

seriously, that's plenty to run guildwars flawlessly. I have a 2.4 ghz AMD64, 512 ram on my laptop and I have no problems.

i've got a 1.1 gHz athlon, 768meg RAM, & a 5200, & have no problems, except for one isolated incedent last night with a long load time....
