if there is a contract in place that says VU will manufacture the CDs and be the distributor for the HL2, then that contract does entitle them to some share of profits. not the sold online profits but all distribution profits of physical CDs. i think what will be argued is whether VU had **exclusive rights** in the contract to distribute the HL2. i havent looked thru the contract so i dont know. otherwise, they dont have a leg to stand on. my understanding is that they were contracted to distribute the CDs and they get the profit from that. if thats the case, then Valve can distribute HL2 all they want online and not have to pay a dime for that kind of distribution. think about it, why should VU get a cut of the profits for something that they didnt contribute to or put any work into. Valve created steam and they want to use it as a distribution channel. they can do that. many companies have multiple distribution channels and online is one of them. if VU didnt contribute to steam or that dist channel, then they have no right to that profit **unless** they exclusivity rights in the contract.
