Possibly the new MMO not based off their current IPs.

World of Lost Vikings, if only it were true. :*(

That would be something I might temporarily ban my anti-Activision policy for...no doubt to later regret it.

Titan? Project Hydra?

A friend (and reliable source) who worked at Blizzard and maintains some internal aquaintances claimed he was told Project Hydra was a red herring intended to discourage other developers, publishers and investors from producing future competition. The supposed purpose was to allow Blizzard a lengthier period to enjoy higher profits while maintaining a higher subscription base. According to him, "Project Hydra" was nothing more than WoW 2.0 revamped (Cataclysm).

Titan is claimed to be a new IP in the Blizzard franchise, while another leak has claimed that is not entirely true and that Titan is an FPSMMO with a new twist on an existing Blizzard IP. I am trying desperately to find the source link for this information, but my searches are now bogged down by all the gaming sites that are re-reporting the leaked project slate. A private blogger had posted this last bit of "info" and claimed his source was a roommate who is close friends to a codemonkey @ Blizzard. He claims this person comes over to his home frequently and has stated Titan (at this time) is nothing more than an engine....no art, sound, music, content, etc. The Titan team is allegedly in the Diablo wing of Blizzard headquarters and security has sealed off this wing except to those working in this section of the building. A private blogger? This must be BRAND NEW CONCRETE INFORMATION!!!! Hurnffff.

Blizzard's official job posting

My personal take on the rumors I have read:

It would seem likely that having a dev team working on the next gen MMO "Titan" in the Diablo wing could indicate a Diablo-themed FPSMMO. (Arf. I know....BRILLIANT! I should be, like, a detective or something)

"Titan" sounds more like a Starcraft name, and SC would seem the most likely of Blizzard's IP's to convert into an FPSMMO, and the least likely to pull existing subscribers away from their current games. An SC FPSMMO would have a completely different playstyle vs the strategy games and it would not be 'yet another fantasy MMO.'

It could be a completely new IP although this other rumor points to a twist. If Blizzard does indeed feed disinformation to the public (which is highly possible), it would make sense they would want to discourage more future competitors from even thinking of competing with their caliber of development/artistic integrity by saying they are developing an entirely new IP (which would crush the prospective hopes of MMO would-be's). Blizzard could reap the profits of that percentage of subscriber base who has fewer other quality options to turn to.

Project hydra was "named" as a next gen MMO of a new IP...

That is why I connect the 2...

Yeah, I did the same intially. (I put some credibility in my friend's statement to me as he has supplied accurate information in the past, but I understand it comes across as potentially unreliable word of mouth to others). I mean, Blizzard officially announced it as a new game. In one of their previous announcements about Project Hydra, Blizzard made a statement saying they had about 2 times the development staff of classic WoW (about 150 development employees) working on the game. They totally made it sound like their next game was going to be a massive juggernaut...and pretty much any Blizzard release would be. Everything about Titan is rumor at this point, and I have nothing to offer other than additional rumors I have read and personally heard from people "in the know." Still, it's fun to speculate a little what those rumors could mean if there was some truth in them. Rumors posted on MMO Champion are typically pretty reliable....they seem to have good sources.

Personally I don't think knowledge of blizzard doing another MMO would not really affect another company's decision to make an MMO. If anything Blizzard has shown the world how profitable it is. When Blizzard decided on WOW they went against Sony and Everquest who had most of the market and they were making Everquest 2 at the time as well.

Before Everquest, Ultima Online had most of the market and was in the process of making Ultima Online 2 when Everquest came out . (well UO2 was in production in 1999 when Everquest launched and was cancelled in 2001).

So from the short history of MMO's the current top dog usually doesn't do as well with their second attempt, as Blizzard and the other companies know I'm sure.

So maybe Blizzard will be the one that changes this trend or maybe we will see something very new and exciting in the MMO from someone unexpected sometime in the next few years.

I don't understand why people try to find out about Blizzard projects so far in advance. I mean, don't we already have to wait long enough AFTER the game is announced?

Case in point: StarCraft II was announced in 2007. We finally got to play it earlier this year.

I agree that a leak is bad news for Blizzard, but there's nothing all that surprising in the chart. And this is Blizzard we're talking about. The company has a reputation for pushing back release dates multiple times and until the retail product is so polished it shines (which I and, I imagine, others strongly prefer to the "release new, patch/add it in DLC later" mindset evident in releases like Fallout: New Vegas, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Medal of Honor).

Side note: WoW is going to be around for a very, very long time yet. Dark Age of Camelot is by no means as popular as it once was, but DAoC servers are still live. Everquest's 7th expansion just released in October. Yes, this October. October 2010.

So while WoW won't be the most popular MMO forever, MMO history suggests it won't be shutting down any time soon.

Yeah right, like they could make a successful MMO out of an RTS game world.

I agree speculating too far this early is going to come up with nothing very concrete. Personally, I just like to try to keep it basic and speculate which IP would be mostly to convert into an FPSMMO. (*IF* it was an existing IP and *IF* it is an FPSMMO)

hahaha

Just to let yall know.... WoW has been predicted to last for at least another 20 years, if they continue to do stuff right (by MMO analysts, and other big developer heads). If they mess it all up, then they will fail, but if they don't... we gotsa lotsa WoW expansions to buy....

If by right you mean "addiction-like-behavior-inducing" then yeah, I'd expect WoW to be its own country soon

This 'leak' is probably a fake. However, it can't be that off, it's what everyone kinda expects. D3 in 2011, WoW xpacs every 2 years. New MMOs/hydra is probably a diablo mmo? Don't know, may not be an mmo at all. Ah... the fun of speculation

It's pretty widely believed that their new MMO is going to be an FPS mmo. It's Blizzard, when they set out to do something, they usually do it pretty well... I don't know why it can't be an MMO.

Starcraft Ghost called.

Oh wait, no it didn't. Because it's forever locked away on a jump drive from 2003.

Ah found that link I was trying to dig up about Titan:

http://www.somebits.com/weblog/culture/games/blizzard-project-titan.html

Is Project Titan Blizzard's new MMO?

"File this in the rumour bin: a leak of Blizzard's product roadmap, with some analysis here. It may or may not be true, but it looks plausible.

But the big news is the last item, Titan, releasing Q4 2013. Could this be Blizzard's long-rumoured secret new MMO? We know they've been hiring for it, we know many of the original WoW developers were pulled off of Warcraft right after the Burning Crusade lanuch to work on something secret and new. But that's all we know.

But now we have a name. Project Titan. I've found a possible confirmation: Google delving turns up a guy named theNoid who claims to have an inside source at Blizzard. He's been talking about "Project Titan" at Blizzard for the last 18 months.

I can't go into too much detail, but a guy on my team lives with a code monkey who's working on Project Titan at Blizzard. This is their rumored successor to WoW, and is located in the Diablo wing of the building, higher security locked doors. --theNoid Jul 2009

Project Titan is locked tight at Blizzard, my friend lives with a guy working in there. This is Blizzards next MMO, which has been stated 1000 times to be a complete new IP and it is not WoW2. --theNoid Aug 2009

Project Titan? No, its more like 2013.. trust me. The core framework is all thats done, the engine. The programmers were tasked at building an engine for a game that did not yet exist and still does not exist. No art, no modeling, no nothing has started on Project Titan yet. Also, Blizzard has announced it being a new IP, which isn't entirely true either. Its a spin off of an existing franchise, a franchise that I think is going to excite people very, very much. Which one? Which would would people want more than any other? Blizzard runs a pretty tight ship, leaks are few and far between but tend to go unnoticed when coming from the unexpected --theNoid, Mar 2010

I also found another mention of the "Project Titan" name in September 2010 from a different source, but no idea if he's independent:

Next-Gen MMO (aka. Project Titan): Highly unlikely anything about this project will be published for a while. Not until WoW is on a decline. Anything else would just be self-sabotage. --Crowe

Taken separately, both the leaked product roadmap and the forum posts from "theNoid" are plausible but not particularly trustable. But the fact these two independent rumours confirm each other is quite interesting.

The name "Titan" for a Blizzard MMO is rich irony, btw, since Titan was also the name of the cancelled Halo MMO. Particularly if Blizzard's new thing ends up being an MMOFPS, as is rumoured. Who knows, maybe someone worked a deal and it's actually some of the same people? It seems very unlikely Blizzard would release a game based on the Halo IP."
