Source code released = freeware?

quake 1 and 2 and 3 are source only though, right? meaning you can't actually play the game, only develop with the source code?

If it is that way, you can always just compile the source to spit the game out the other end. No biggie.

True, but you won't be able to play them without the resources on the CDs (levels, characters, textures, etc).

Agree with Killerah...the Quake 1, 2 and 3 *ENGINE* is open-source. The Quake 1, 2 and 3 games that were built using those engines are NOT open-source. Textures, models and sounds all have copyrights. If that were not the case, the Q3 open-source engine download wouldn't be a mere 5.5 MB download (link)

Example: The Enemy Team Fortress Mod was based off of the Q3F mod. In order to bring it over and make it a ET "free" release, they had to remove all Q3 assets (models, textures, sounds) and replace them with original assets.

The same would go for any game that was developed with the Q3 engine now, it would have to have all its own art and audio.
