Survivor Tips

Alright guys, I need some help from the resident experts. My new project is to get a hold of this elusive title. I started an Ele in NF last night. To start I've just been taking advantage of the shrine bonuses and doing the secondary quests. So far, so good (level 6 - lol).

When is the best time to use scrolls? My Ranger has quite a few stored up that could come in handy.

What is the best or most useful secondary profession for an Ele going for the survivor title? I was thinking about going Mesmer. Would Monk be better for self heals?

I've been reading a lot about leveling pets in the past few days and the wurms just outside of Boreal Station is a common approach. I know its not the same as survivor but the approach is the same I think. In HM they are level 30 and get you something like 365xp per kill. There are approx. 10 of them so thats roughly 3650 xp per zone assuming I didn't miss count them.

I think Ursen is the resident expert on survivors. I know he does a lot of his by Vanquishing Plains of Jarin over and over and over and over and........

My one and only survivor earned it on a double cap weekend. I started him in Prophecies and just played normally until he reached LA. From there I transferred him to Cantha and did all the easy "fed ex" quests in the Kaineng area. I did Viz Square (not recommended) and Nahpui Quarter to Ascend and unlock all 2ndary professions. At that point, he went to NF and made it to Kourna. The Kournan and Kaineng areas have a wealth of easy-to-reach skills to cap, especially if you have all professions available. On the double weekend that was 10k per skill and he earned over a million exp.

Some general tips:

Survivor takes patience. Never get in a hurry. Just take it slow and easy and flag your heroes into the rough patches.

If things start to go south, get outta there fast. Don't stay thinking you can turn it around.

Never take a survivor someplace you're not extremely familiar with. You don't want pop up surprises ruining your trip.

Never go afk. EVER!

Never play a survivor if you're tired and can't focus.

Never play a survivor if the game is laggy.

Don't experiment with builds. Take a build you know works and you know how to use well. (Same rule for the heroes in your party)

Don't pug. Just don't. I lost a survivor to a pug doing Mayhem in the Market. I was already a level 20 Rit and figured it was an easy quest for me. I joined a pug asking for help. When we reached the Bazaar to talk to all the NPCs (the easy part), one of the team aggro'd Lian's group and dragged them all back to us.

Fissure of Woe. I know this sounds wrong, but it really is good experience. If you clear you get 100k+ experience. It's the easiest of the Elite areas and not difficult if you go with a good team that knows what they're doing. I'd be happy to take you along one day. If you've cleared before you know what to expect. If you haven't, bring a backline build and follow my directions and you'll be fine.

I will stand by the secondary of Ranger or Paragon, IF, you will be ascending in Prophecies first, which would give you 50k experience. This means you can't even go to the location EOTN before ascending. Scrolls are best used if there is a relative continuous flow of critters, but not large mobs. Yes large mobs are good for the short term scrolls, but until you get more used to keeping a Survivor alive avoid them. Start with the 50% exp scrolls in Istan until you get the hang of them. Think about the quests available, line them up so several can be done at once. Wait on the SS quests that give you additional attribute points until you pick up Dunkuro. By that time you should have enough SS points to complete them both and will have a real boost on leveling Dunky from the experience. Never try to "hang in there" because you "almost have it", run often, run hard. If your health bar drops below 50% you are waiting too long to run. Save Drunken Shauben, Assult on Beknur harbor and the following quests until you have Olias. It should be that you should only have to leave Istan 1 time to get Olias before you hit 20. If you can't do that safely switch to Factions and do all of the quests that can be done without doing Vizunah square. These are things I do that work for me feel out what helps you, using a lot of caution if this is your first Survivor. Also read the wiki on Survivors. Really it is just a matter of being patient, and willing to run when necessary. And using the x to drop out is just a little quicker than any other method.

Wow. Thanks for the help, guys. Ursen, great run this morning. Thanks, it really helped. Thanks to Ursen, I'm now lvl 10 and moving well. With an Elite Tome, Green Staff, and MOX at lvl 20 things are moving along.

Im not afraid to run at all. If things start going bad I'm not afraid to drop a mission at any point in time. Ursen, what do you mean by using the "x" to drop out quickly?

Instead of going to F12, for a really fast dump out hit the little box with the x in it in the top right corner. It saves a few seconds of hang time where you may get further pummeled and wind up dead even though you started the process to exit. When things are going south in a hurry it can make all the difference in the world. Btw use the Zehlon Reach missions to level Melonni before doing Joknur Diggings mission, makes a lot of difference, and save the mime for when you can come back with a party of 8 out of Beknur Harbour.

So using the x at the top will completely log me out? I never know which method leaves me logged in where I could still die and which totally removes me from the game.

No method leaves you logged in, however there is a little lag time between logging out from the client and what happens on the server. The only thing that doesn't log you out is an accidental disconnect/turning of your modem/manually ending the gw.exe process in task manager. So just don't do any of those in panic, even if the first one is beyond your control and the last takes quite a while to do.......

I game on a Mac and I'm wondering if it might be easier to somehow accidentally end the program in the equivalent of task manager due to the program I have to run to play GW.

Thanks. I'll just use the x then and hope there's next to no lag on the servers.

Actually, I've always been told that using the X in a panic situation is not a good method for saving your survivor. It's better to "map out" and the quickest is just to to go the Guild Hall.

X'ing will close the client, but as previously mentioned it could be a few seconds before the server realizes you're not there any more and you can die in 5 seconds. Mapping out immediately removes your character from the explorable.

Thank you Orry and Raven for clarifying a little. Raven you are right if you have normal hand coordination, which I don't have, something I sometimes forget. Thank you for the correction.

Thanks, Raven. Really helpful and good to know. I honestly hadn't considered the guild hall and just always mapped out by trying to return to an outpost (not the best method for sure), and too many things can go wrong with that.

I'm really enjoying the process of trying to obtain this title, even though it can be extremely nerve racking and I hate to think about losing him. It has really taught me a lot about the game. To say that my style of play has changed would be a huge understatement.

Ursen, I leveled Melonni last night and made it through Jokanur Diggings (had to redo it twice because a ghost died on me). Almost to level 13 and counting. I'm off to hunt some undead today.

If you are able to play skillfully using just the keyboard, downsize the guild window and keep it open with your mouse hovering over the enter guild hall button so you can click the mouse at a moments notice. Note: If you are with other people you will have to either click an accept button or press enter immediately after this.

Orry, funny you mention that. When situations look like they could be tight I've started opening the Guild window just in case.

Thanks for the note about playing with other people. Good to know when someone from the guild or Alliance is helping me out.

+1 here for f12 + space. This does have less lag than clicking X. Clicking X is closing the program, and sending the message to the server to close the connection is not the first thing that happens. When you log out, you are logging out. Of course, this assumes your reaction doesn't lag...you need to make sure this is a reflex. The last thing you want is to be under 25% health and hunting around for a key.

Other than that, +1 to pretty much everything that was said. Be patient. Don't experiment. It's better to take a little longer somewhere than to lose 50+ hours of work. Also, you should look for places for free/easy xp. Like right now, you can get a bunch of easy XP doing the first 2 halloween quests. :)

A big thank you to all of you for the advice. I finally made it last night after finishing a couple of the primary quests on Istan and capping an elite. Survivor is definitely the title I am most proud of and my biggest accomplishment in the game thus far.

For all I have done it so far, still the first time I got to level 1 Survivor was the big one. Now the first one is semi retired, congratulations on a very difficult step in learning the game.

A couple of questions for a first time survivor:

What is the quickest way to get to an armor upgrade in Factions?

Also, any suggestions on a supportive secondary for a Ritualist in the early going, until I can get to start changing secondaries?

Factions in my unprofessional opinion keep buying armour until you hit Kaineng City, then there is inexpensive max armour in Kaineng Center. Let me know and I can run you there from the Market Place where you will come in to the mainland. Again where do you plan to ascend? If you are going to jog over to Kryta to ascend a secondary of Ranger is guaranteed easy ascension against doppleganger. If not, and just working through Factions I might think about Monk. Raven and Fire might have a better idea of a Rit secondary though.

Thanks.

Another questions - I have tons of tomes - would it be worth it to go ahead and bump up my skills from the git-go?
